Mozambique

In Mozambique’s case, Portuguese colonization had an almost 130 year impact on policies regarding the rights of LGBT members of society, but showed a turnaround in acceptance which is possible for Uganda as well.

Mozambique previously had anti-homosexuality laws from 1886 when they were still a Portuguese colony, which criminalized homosexual behavior, and even deemed it a vice against nature (Articles 70 and 71 of the 1886 Penal Code had imposed penalties on people who habitually practiced “vices against nature”).

These policies were changed in July 2014, when the Parliament approved Law 35/2014, which removed earlier criminalizing provisions. This revised Penal Code came into force in June 2015”.
